Hey there, folks,

It's Maggie McGown, checking in to share some thoughts on a matter that's been buzzing around the corridors of power lately: the role of speed cameras in our communities.

Let's be real: speeding is a serious issue. It endangers lives, plain and simple. But here's the kicker — the way we've been tackling it might just be doing more harm than good, especially to those who can least afford it.

Picture this: you're cruising down the road, maybe a little heavy-footed, and bam! There it is, the dreaded flash of the speed camera. Suddenly, you're slapped with a hefty fine, maybe even some points on your license, and a hefty raise in insurance sots. For some of us, that's just an inconvenience. But for many in our communities, it's a financial gut punch for people struggling to make ends meet or out on the roads for a living!  It's like adding insult to injury, punishing those who are already facing an uphill battle.

See, these speed cameras aren't exactly spread out evenly across the city. They often appear a few yards after a change of speed sign. And they tend to pop up more frequently in neighborhoods where folks are already struggling to make ends meet.

Now, I'm all for keeping our streets safe. But safety shouldn't come at the expense of equity. That's why we should take a hard look at these speed cameras and ask ourselves: are they really serving their purpose, or are they just perpetuating injustice?

Let's talk solutions. Instead of relying solely on fines and penalties, let's invest in education and outreach. Let's improve our roads, our signage, and our public transportation options. Let's tackle the root causes of speeding rather than slapping Band-Aids on the symptoms.

And let's do it together, as a community. Because at the end of the day, we're all in this together. It's time to hit the brakes on unfair policies and pave the way for a safer, more equitable future.

We will all be in driverless cars soon anyway, where the speed will be limited by computers.

Let me know what you think.

Until next time,

Maggie McGown
