Hello, dear readers,

Today, I bring to you a topic close to the hearts of many Scots — the ownership of our majestic coastline. For centuries, our shores have been a source of pride, beauty, and sustenance for our nation. Yet, in a twist of fate, much of this coastline remains under the ownership of the Crown. It's time we reconsidered this arrangement and reclaimed what rightfully belongs to the people of Scotland.

Let's start with some history. Scotland's coastline stretches for thousands of miles, offering breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and endless opportunities for recreation and exploration. From the rugged cliffs of the Highlands to the sandy beaches of the Hebrides, our coastline is a treasure trove of natural wonders.

But despite its importance to our identity and way of life, large swathes of this coastline are owned by the Crown Estate, effectively placing them in the hands of the monarchy. This arrangement dates back centuries, rooted in a time when power and land ownership were concentrated in the hands of a privileged few.

Fast forward to the present day, and it's clear that this outdated system no longer serves the best interests of the Scottish people. By taking back ownership of our coastline, we can unlock its full potential for the benefit of all.

Imagine a future where our coastal communities have greater control over their own destinies, where decisions about land use, development, and conservation are made locally, with the interests of residents and the environment front and center.

By returning ownership of the coastline to the people of Scotland, we can ensure greater accountability, transparency, and stewardship of this precious resource. We can empower coastal communities to thrive economically, culturally, and environmentally while preserving the unique character and biodiversity of our shores for future generations to enjoy.

Of course, this transition won't happen overnight, and there will be challenges along the way. But the benefits far outweigh the costs. By reclaiming ownership of our coastline, we can reaffirm our sovereignty, strengthen our sense of identity, and pave the way for a more just and sustainable future for all Scots.

So let's raise our voices and demand that our coastline be returned to its rightful owners — the people of Scotland. Together, we can reclaim our heritage and ensure that our shores remain a source of pride and prosperity for generations to come.

Until next time,

Maggie McGown
